If you are interested in being supervised by me for a PhD at LSE, please do get in touch! When doing so you may find the following helpful:
- As an Assistant Professor I am only able to act as second supervisor and you would need to find a primary supervisor either in the Department of Government or another department at LSE.
- I would be particularly excited to assist in the supervision of PhD projects that are related to one or more of my research specialisms, which include Marx and Marxism, the republican and socialist traditions, and theories of popular democracy. Though I may be less directly suited, I would also be interested in projects looking at the history and theory of related traditions, such as anarchism, feminism, and anti-imperialism. (Note that my interest in Marxism does not automatically extend to empirical projects on countries that claim or have claimed to be Marxist).
- Methodologically I combine a contextual approach to the history of political thought with analytic political theory, broadly understood. I would probably be most suited to projects with similar methodological approaches but I’m also open to other political theory approaches. In general, I am most interested in projects rooted in history and real world politics, rather than ones focused on more abstract philosophical and conceptual questions.
- While I can provisionally agree to act as a second supervisor, PhD admissions are handled at the department level. See here for details.
